Stuff

by Meredith on May 12, 2011

Stuff. I don’t know about the rest of the world but we Americans keep alot of “stuff”. Stuff, stuff and more stuff. Some of it is good stuff, some of it is just plain garbage, why do we keep all this stuff? Yes, some of you might think I sound a bit like George Carlin and his “stuff vs shit” bit.. but you know he has a point.

Between watching television shows about cleaning house and hoarding and recently cleaning out my own father’s collections… I feel conflicted about what to do with “my” stuff. Books and papers and pictures and trinkets, trains, planes and automobiles… what can one person do with all this stuff? It’s so overwhelming.

My father was a collector of all the stuff mentioned plus more. He treated it not only as a hobby but like a savings account. It was going to be his retirement job. He passed away late last year and now my brother and I are trying to figure out what to do with all his “stuff”. For whatever reason my brother feels sentimental about it all and wants to keep it. Sure there are a few momentos I would like to have, but I don’t need 150+ boxes of MORE stuff…. I have my own! Obviously, I would like to sell it.. but how do you convince someone that they don’t need more stuff? Ugh. I miss you daddy, but OMFG the stuff!

I beg people to take a look around them, sell some things, throw some things away! Manage your stuff so that someone who loves you doesn’t have to make these decisions.

Thank you!

Financial Protection – Condoms Ineffective

April 27, 2011

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was initiated to help middle class Americans establish a new found understanding for the financial market. They claim they will educate, enforce and study financial information to keep people better informed. Because of the Wall Street melt down of 2008 many people were blindsided and lost their life savings in the collapsing financial disaster. This [...]

Food Revolution

April 18, 2011

I think this show is fantastic. The United States has been over processed, over weight and over prescribed for too long. I laugh in irony that it takes a Brit to tell us we are eating wrong… and yet he is being fought each pound of the way. What he offers is a huge alternative to the lack of nutrition [...]

Injustice

April 13, 2011

There are few things in the world that inspire my attention more than an injustice. There are also inevitabilities in life that we cannot escape, such as pain, destruction or even war. But as they have existed since we have, there is no changing their course.  Injustice is another matter. Where do we need to draw the line [...]

Thirteen – Paradise Awry

April 4, 2011

Thirteen. What an odd feeling age. You are transitioning into adulthood yet you still have all the rules and requirements as a child. Including following the whims of your parents when they tell you they are moving you to  Maui. Having been there a couple of times on family vacation, my brother and I thought what a [...]
